Things to Do in Brian Head

BrianHead was originally visited by settlers in the 1850's and was used for grazing of cattle and sheep. In the 1890's the area's population grew becoming the region's sawmill headquarters due to the abundance of lumber as well as streams. In addition, Brian Head was famous at the time for its production of butter and cheese, produced in an area called "Little Ireland", near the base of Brian Head Peak.

In 1964 the Resort opened with a single chairlift, and warming hut. In 1970 the resort was expanded to include two additional lifts, and in March 1975 the resort became an incorporated community. Brian Head is approx 10,000ft above sea level and over 11,000 at the peak. Brian Head Resort has two distinct ski areas connected by a ski bridge. Navajo is the beginner slope with world renowned ski school, while Giant Steps gives intermediate and expert skiers a challenging terrain. Population of 135 this small Resort town is perfect for all members of your family to get away!

Summer Activities

Summer time is a secret in Brian Head! There are many activities available in and around Brian Head. Hike on one of over 15 trails varying from easy to difficult or take the scenic lift ride up and walk down the slopes of giant steps.

Hike in and around lava tubes formed centuries ago at Mammoth Caves just 30 miles to the south. Visit Cedar Breaks and hike the alpine pond trail as well as the trail that follows the park form one end to the other. Hike to the Peak of Brian Head and view Cedar City to the west and Beaver to the north or hike in and around Brian Heads 12 + trails.

Brian Head has over 100 miles of downhill, single track and an additional 100 miles of cross country trails. Brian Head features Utah's largest mountain bike park with 5,000 ft descents and pro-designed freestyle elements. With two full service bike shops with rentals, gears, maps and shuttles you can find what you need to hit the trails.

Brian Head is surrounded by 5 National Parks less than an hours' drive. Grand Staircase 43 miles; Zion-34 miles; Kolob Canyons- 26 miles; Bryce Canyon-39 miles; Cedar Breaks-5 miles; or take a scenic Back way drive.

Drop your line into a lake or stream and you'll end up with a Rainbow, German Brown, or Brook Trout. Color Country has 20 reservoirs, 9 natural lakes, and 10 creeks and rivers that are open and stocked for fishing.

Outdoor activities not your thing? Take an art class offered by BHVR! Learn the basics of Silver Clay, Cast Glass, Fiber sculpture, or watercolor from local artists. Kids craft camps also available for family reunions.

Winter Activities

Brian Head is known for its beautiful scenery in the wintertime and all the fun activities available. Ski or snow board at the resorts two mountains connected by a street bridge; Cross Country Ski into Cedar Breaks for a breathtaking view of the National Park; Snowmobile to Duck Creek and back or take a guided tour of the back country; Sled on the free hills or visit the Resorts tubing hill and enjoy the ride up and down; or just come and enjoy the beautiful snow!

Not interested in winter sports? Try Ice Fishing! There are 20 reservoirs, 9 natural lakes, and 10 creeks and rivers that are open and stocked for Ice fishing when winter hits. The most popular are Panguitch Lake, Otter Creek, Minersville, and Wide Hollow reservoirs. Always remember to check the ice thickness and weather conditions before ice fishing.

Brian Head is an Alpine Climate from October to May. To avoid getting stuck, call ahead for road conditions and come prepared with snow chains or 4 wheel drive during these months.

Due to the nature of the Mountain, when it snows in Brian Head snow removal is limited and is removed in a specific order. The county removes snow on the main roads while private snow removal companies do driveways and parking lots. Walkways are done by private complex managers and may be delayed due to the impassable roads. Please be patient with these workers as they can only go so fast! Relax and enjoy the beautiful winter wonderland outside.
